Indian Assistance of NRs.11.05 crores in districts Ilam, Parsa, Kailali and Lalitpur

Four separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed on January 11, 2010 by the Embassy of India, Kathmandu with concerned executing agency of Government of Nepal and the beneficiary organizations for providing the grant assistance:

(a)    NRs.1.57 crores to Shree Fikkal Higher Secondary School, Fikkal, Ilam for construction of school building and provision of furniture and computers. The school is presently holding classes in an old tin roofed buildings made of stone and mud mortar, which is over 65 years old. The new infrastructure being created with the assistance of Government of India will provide modern and safe facilities to over 1100 students including over 55% girls and will enable the school to cope up with the increasing number of students.

(b)    NRs.2.70 crores to Shree Dwardevi Secondary School, Alau VDC-6, Parsa for construction of double storied school building, a double storied administrative building, toilet block, compound wall and provision of furniture. The school is presently facing acute shortage of space for holding classes. The new infrastructure being created with the assistance of Government of India will provide much needed classroom space to over 1100 students including about 46% girls. 

(c)    NRs.3.52 crores to Tikapur Multiple Campus, Tikapur, Kailali for construction of double storied college block, a single storied library block and provision of furniture. The campus is providing bachelor and masters level education to over 1700 students from Kailali and the neighboring districts. The new infrastructure being created with the assistance of GOI will provide a well equipped infrastructure to the students and enable the campus to meet the requirements of increasing number of students. The library building will help the campus to collect and store invaluable books not only for the students but also the people of Kailali and adjoining districts.

(d)    NRs.3.26 crores to Society for Development of Lalitpur for restoration of buildings of historical and cultural importance at nine places in the district. Restoration of these buildings will help in preservation of centuries old heritage and culture of Nepal including Buddhist shrines.

While the projects in Ilam and Kailali are being executed by the respective District Development Committees, the projects in Parsa and Lalitpur are being executed by respective Division Offices of Department of Urban Development and Building Construction of Ministry of Physical Planning Works, Government of Nepal as per local norms and regulations and these local authorities will be fully responsible for the quality and timely completion of the projects. Separate oversight committees consisting of representatives from the relevant beneficiary organizations and relevant local development authorities will ensure effective and timely completion of the projects, so that they can service the needs of the local community. These projects are to be implemented as Small Development Projects under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme in consultation with the Government of Nepal.

India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme has an outlay over 2590 crores with the more than 360 large and small projects currently being implemented in all districts of Nepal in the sectors of education, health and infrastructure development. These reflect the commitment of the Government and the people of India to work together with the people of Nepal in their stride towards peace and development. These development projects have been undertaken in response to local needs and in partnership with the Government of Nepal and these infrastructures stand as a symbol of the deep friendship that characterizes the relationship between India and Nepal. Government of India looks forward to many more such initiatives in association with the Government and people of Nepal.
